An Honest Contractor’s Perspective

An automatic cover can be valuable—but it is not automatically the right choice.

Automatic covers provide meaningful safety, heat-retention, evaporation, and debris-control benefits. They also add structural complexity, equipment, fabric, moving parts, drainage requirements, and ongoing homeowner maintenance.

We Install Them Correctly

When a cover makes sense, we plan the vault, track, coping, lid, drainage, utilities, hydraulic or electrical system, and surrounding masonry as one coordinated construction system—not as an accessory added at the end.

On new construction, early coordination gives us the best opportunity to conceal the tracks and mechanism cleanly. On remodels, the existing pool and deck elevations may limit the available options.

We Do Not Oversell Them

PLAPCO is not an automatic-cover sales company. Our responsibility is to explain both sides so the homeowner understands the convenience and safety benefits as well as the rainwater pumping, cleaning, vault care, repairs, fabric replacement, and operational habits that come with ownership.

A cover should fit the homeowner’s lifestyle—not become a source of frustration after construction is complete.

A compliant automatic safety cover can be an important layer of protection, but it does not replace active adult supervision, proper gates and barriers, alarms, safe operating practices, or any additional protections required by the local jurisdiction.
Hydraulic vs. Electric

PLAPCO offers both systems for different layouts, run lengths, and budgets.

We do not automatically favor hydraulic or electric. Both can produce a clean concealed installation when the pool is planned correctly. The better choice depends on the equipment location, distance to the vault, setback limitations, desired vault configuration, pool size, and overall construction budget.

Hydraulic Option

Aquamatic Hydramatic

The hydraulic system PLAPCO commonly installs uses a power pack located remotely, typically at or near the pool equipment pad. Hydraulic lines are then routed from the equipment area to the cover mechanism at the pool.

PLAPCO planning guideline: When the hydraulic run approaches or exceeds roughly 150 feet, we typically move toward an electric system unless the cover manufacturer and installer approve a different solution for that specific project.
Electric Option

Pool Covers, Inc. Electric System

With the electric systems PLAPCO may use from Pool Covers, Inc., the drive motor is located with the cover mechanism in the recessed housing or vault. Electrical conduit, controls, and the required power supply are coordinated as part of the pool construction.

The goal is not to sell one drive type. The goal is to select the system that fits the property and can be serviced reliably after the pool is complete.
Track Integration

New construction gives us more freedom than a remodel.

The cover tracks must remain straight and parallel. The best concealed detail depends on whether the track is planned before the coping is installed or added later to an existing pool whose deck elevations cannot change.

Usually Best for New Construction

In-Wall Track

An in-wall track receptor is planned into the top of the pool shell before the coping is installed. The operating track is concealed beneath the coping, producing the cleanest and least noticeable finished appearance.

The receptor occupies space within the coping assembly and commonly raises the planned coping and surrounding deck relationship by approximately one inch, depending on the selected system and masonry detail. That elevation must be planned from the beginning rather than discovered after the deck is already established.

Often Better for Remodels

Under-Mount Track

On a remodel, the existing coping and surrounding concrete elevations may already be fixed. An under-mount track is mechanically fastened directly beneath suitable coping stone, allowing the cover to operate without raising the adjacent deck.

This can preserve the existing elevation, but the coping overhang, stone condition, attachment area, pool geometry, and straight track path still have to be evaluated. Some existing pools cannot accept a clean concealed retrofit without broader reconstruction.

Important: Not every existing pool can accept a concealed automatic cover. Pool shape, coping thickness, track alignment, deck elevations, vault space, setbacks, access, raised walls, spas, and water features can make the installation more complicated or rule out a particular configuration.
Raised Spas & Water Features

They are possible—but they add caveats, tradeoffs, and cost.

Automatic covers work best with a clean, uninterrupted cover path. Raised spas, spillways, waterfalls, raised walls, and other features do not always make a cover impossible, but they require earlier planning and more custom construction.

Raised Spa Integration

A raised spa may require a recessed notch or pass-through in the spa face so water can flow behind the cover line. That detail can be visually noticeable and may not look as clean as an uninterrupted raised-spa wall.

Water Features & Raised Walls

Spillways, waterfalls, rockwork, raised beams, and adjoining structures must be coordinated with the track path, cover fabric, clearances, and masonry. Custom solutions are available, but they require more engineering, layout, and construction tolerance.

Expect Tradeoffs

The homeowner may have to choose between the cleanest cover detail and the cleanest water-feature or spa appearance. These configurations commonly add masonry work, special detailing, installation time, and cost.

The Cleaner Vault Detail

Masonry-finished tray lids look much better than a standard aluminum lid.

A standard aluminum lid is usually the most economical way to conceal the mechanism, but it remains visible and has a utilitarian appearance. When the pool layout and budget allow, PLAPCO commonly installs a masonry-finished tray lid—often called a walk-on tray lid—supported by heavy-duty stainless-steel brackets or trays.

Matching coping stone or another approved hardscape finish is placed over the support system so the vault lid continues the appearance of the surrounding pool edge. This creates a cleaner and more integrated result than an exposed aluminum lid.

“Walk-on” does not mean play surface.

The engineered brackets and trays can support the incidental weight of a person stepping across the lid, but the individual masonry stones are still removable pieces rather than a permanently bonded slab.

Children should not be encouraged to run, jump, or play across these lid stones. Repeated impact can chip an edge, shift a stone, or crack a piece. A damaged or displaced stone can create a serious fall-through hazard into the vault below.

The lid should be treated as service access that blends into the coping—not as a normal pathway, seating area, or place for furniture.

The Real Construction Cost

An automatic cover is more than a motor, fabric, and track.

On a typical new pool, PLAPCO advises homeowners to plan for approximately $20,000–$25,000 or more for the complete integrated cover scope. The final amount depends on the pool size, system, track, lid, vault, run lengths, masonry, drainage, site conditions, and project-specific details.

When reviewing another contractor’s proposal, be careful with a $10,000–$15,000 “automatic-cover allowance.” That is not how PLAPCO represents the complete integrated cost. A low allowance in another proposal may cover only the manufacturer’s mechanism and fabric, or a very basic equipment amount, while leaving out the structural gunite vault, added steel and gunite, electrical or hydraulic runs, drainage, masonry, tile, coping, stainless lid supports, inspections, and other work required to build the cover into the pool correctly.

A balanced decision should include the safety and efficiency benefits as well as the cost, maintenance, visual impact when closed, and daily operating habits.

What automatic-cover ownership actually requires.

Exact instructions vary by manufacturer and system. The owner’s manual and cover-service company govern, but these are the practical habits PLAPCO wants homeowners to understand before purchasing a cover.

Before Every Operation

Remove Water and Debris

Do not retract the cover with standing water, heavy leaves, sticks, toys, or other weight on the fabric. Clear the travel path and watch the entire pool while operating the system.

During Rainy Weather

Use and Check the Cover Pump

Place the approved cover pump at the low point, keep the discharge path clear, and check it during extended storms rather than assuming it is operating correctly.

Monthly

Rinse Fabric and Tracks

Remove loose debris, rinse the cover with clean water, use only manufacturer-approved mild cleaners, and keep the track channels and sliders free of buildup.

About Every 3 Months

Clean and Inspect the Vault

Remove leaves, dirt, and standing water; confirm the vault drain remains open; and inspect accessible components. Carefully lift and move heavy masonry lid stones so they are not chipped or cracked. Use help when needed and place removed stones on a protected surface.

Before Cover Service

Ask Who Removes the Lid Stones

Many automatic-cover service companies will not remove or reinstall masonry stones because of breakage and liability concerns. Confirm this when scheduling service; the homeowner may need to remove and safely store the lid stones before the technician arrives.

Ongoing

Maintain Water Level and Chemistry

The pool water supports the cover. Keep the water within the manufacturer’s operating range and follow the manufacturer’s instructions after shocking or super-chlorinating before closing the cover.

At Least Annually

Professional Inspection

Have the mechanism, track alignment, ropes or cables, pulleys, controls, fabric, drainage, fasteners, and safety operation inspected and serviced as recommended.

Rainwater management is part of the ownership routine.

During the rainy season, a cover pump sits on top of the cover to remove accumulated water. The pump, discharge hose, cord, and repeated storm checks are part of owning the system, and some homeowners find that routine inconvenient.

Always plug the cover pump into a GFCI-protected outlet and use a heavy-duty outdoor-rated extension cord when needed. Follow the pump manufacturer’s instructions, keep plug connections protected from standing water, and do not treat an extension cord as permanent wiring.

Water, wet leaves, and other debris should be removed before operating the cover. Retracting a loaded cover can strain the fabric and mechanism and can carry debris into the vault.

A Lower-Complexity Safety Alternative

Consider a removable mesh pool barrier instead.

For homeowners who want an additional physical safety barrier but do not want the vault, fabric, rain pump, mechanical system, and ownership routine of an automatic cover, a removable pool fence may be the better fit.

Guardian Pool Fence Systems

Safety without covering the water.

PLAPCO commonly recommends Guardian Pool Fence systems when a removable mesh barrier better matches the homeowner’s priorities. A properly planned fence creates a separate perimeter around the pool while leaving the water open and visible.

  • No automatic-cover vault, motor, fabric, tracks, or cover pump
  • Can be removable or configured with locking sleeves, depending on the selected system and local requirements
  • Available with self-closing and self-latching gate options
  • Does not restrict pool shape in the same way as an automatic cover
  • Still requires proper placement, maintenance, gate discipline, adult supervision, and local approval

Small deck holes and compact storage.

Guardian’s Premier removable fence uses approximately 5/8-inch deck openings—roughly dime-sized. When the fence is removed, small deck plugs or hole covers can be inserted so the openings are less noticeable.

The mesh fence sections can be disconnected, rolled up, and stored compactly in a nearby shed or other protected storage area without taking up much space. Labeling the sections helps ensure they return to the correct deck locations.

Local approval still matters. Barrier requirements vary by city, county, permit, property, and project type. The selected fence, sleeve configuration, height, and gate must be reviewed against the approved plans and applicable local requirements.
