More Than a Cosmetic Refresh

A pool remodel should improve the entire system—not just cover it up.

A quality remodel considers how the pool looks, how it operates, how efficiently the equipment runs, how water moves around the deck, and how the surrounding backyard works as one complete outdoor space.

Remodeling With the Whole Pool in Mind

Many older pools need more than a new interior surface. Plumbing, equipment, waterline tile, coping, lighting, drainage, deck movement, bonding, access, and structural conditions can all affect the finished result.

We evaluate the existing pool and surrounding area so the scope can address the actual project rather than simply applying new materials over aging or failing conditions.

We Don’t Compete on Lowest Price.

There will always be someone willing to present a lower remodel price. Our goal is not to be the lowest number.

Our goal is to provide honest recommendations, proper preparation, quality materials, experienced construction, and a finished project designed for long-term use.

If you value quality, accountability, and long-term performance over shortcuts, we would appreciate the opportunity to earn your trust.

Pool & Backyard Projects

A remodeled pool should feel connected to the entire property.

The strongest renovations bring together the pool finish, tile, coping, equipment, decking, landscaping, lighting, drainage, and outdoor living areas into one finished environment.

What We Remodel

From pool resurfacing to complete backyard renovation.

Some projects are focused on finishes and cosmetic updates. Others involve significant improvements to the pool, plumbing, equipment, deck, drainage, structures, and surrounding outdoor areas.

01

Pool Resurfacing & Tile

Interior plaster or pebble finishes are coordinated with new waterline tile so the finish, grout, shell transition, and tile line work together as a complete remodel system.

02

Coping & Pool Edges

New coping can modernize the appearance of an older pool while improving the finished perimeter, transitions, and connection to the surrounding deck.

03

Equipment & Automation

Pumps, filters, heaters, automation, sanitation, lighting, and equipment-pad improvements can increase convenience, efficiency, serviceability, and performance.

04

Plumbing Improvements

Older pools may benefit from plumbing repairs, re-piping, skimmer replacement, suction or return improvements, equipment-pad work, or hydraulic upgrades.

05

Decks & Hardscape

Pool decks, patios, walkways, steps, retaining walls, and surrounding hardscape can be replaced or expanded so the entire backyard feels intentional.

06

Complete Backyard Renovations

Pool remodeling can be coordinated with outdoor kitchens, fire features, drainage, landscape construction, lighting, pool houses, and larger backyard transformations.

Proper Preparation

The remodel is only as good as what is underneath the finished surface.

Once a remodel is complete, homeowners see the new finish, tile, coping, lighting, equipment, and hardscape. They do not see most of the demolition, preparation, repairs, transition details, or conditions uncovered during construction.

Those hidden details often determine whether the completed remodel performs well over time.

Our reputation is built one backyard at a time, and that means we take the preparation seriously.

Surface Removal

Existing plaster, pebble, paint, coatings, tile, coping, or damaged materials must be removed as required for the approved remodel scope.

Shell & Crack Evaluation

Visible cracks, delamination, hollow areas, penetrations, patching, and existing shell conditions should be evaluated as materials are removed.

Plumbing & Skimmers

Older plumbing, skimmers, returns, drains, fittings, and equipment connections may require repair or replacement before new finishes are installed.

Tile & Coping Transitions

The tile line, grout, coping, bond beam, and new interior finish must meet cleanly and function together at the pool perimeter.

Deck Movement & Drainage

Cracked or lifted decks, expansive soils, drainage, mastic joints, grade changes, and water movement can affect the surrounding remodel.

Equipment Layout

Equipment replacement should consider access, clearances, plumbing, gas, electrical service, automation, drainage, noise, and future maintenance.

Why We Replace Tile During a Refinish

The waterline tile is part of the pool’s long-term finish system.

Replacing tile during a pool refinish is not only about improving the appearance. It helps reset one of the most important transitions in the pool.

Our standard recommendation is to replace the waterline tile whenever we refinish a pool. The new finish, tile, grout, coping, bond beam, and shell transition should be treated as one complete long-term system rather than combining a new interior surface with aging tile and grout.

Tile & Grout Lifespan

Pool tile and grout have a usable lifespan. Older grout may be closer to failure than it appears even when the tile still looks acceptable from the deck.

Watertight Transition

The new pool finish meets and slightly overlaps the bottom edge of the waterline tile. Replacing the tile allows this critical transition to be rebuilt with the new finish.

Protecting the New Finish

If old tile fails later, removing it requires demolition directly against the new pool finish. That work can chip, crack, or damage the new surface where the two materials meet.

Bond Beam & Shell Protection

Failing grout can allow water behind the tile line. Over time, water intrusion can affect the bond beam or concrete shell and turn a smaller issue into a more significant repair.

Easier Maintenance

New tile provides a clean, non-porous surface that is easier to maintain and less prone to algae, staining, and calcium buildup than older etched or deteriorated tile.

One Complete Remodel System

Renewing the tile at the same time as the finish creates a more consistent appearance and helps the major pool-finish components begin their service life together.

When to Remodel

Signs your pool may be ready for renovation.

Some pools simply look outdated. Others have aging materials, inefficient equipment, plumbing concerns, drainage problems, or surrounding hardscape that no longer performs correctly.

Common Pool Issues

  • Rough, stained, worn, or delaminating interior finish
  • Cracked, missing, loose, or outdated waterline tile
  • Failing grout or evidence of water behind the tile line
  • Old coping or deteriorated pool edges
  • Outdated equipment or excessive energy use
  • Poor lighting or no modern automation
  • Plumbing concerns or an outdated equipment-pad layout
  • Pool deck cracking, movement, lifting, or drainage issues
  • Outdated appearance that no longer matches the home

Popular Remodel Goals

  • Modernize the pool’s appearance
  • Improve comfort, usability, convenience, and safety
  • Add a spa, baja shelf, seating, or water feature when feasible
  • Upgrade equipment, lighting, heating, and automation
  • Replace old tile, coping, and interior finish
  • Improve the surrounding patio, deck, or hardscape
  • Correct drainage or site-related concerns
  • Create a more complete outdoor living environment
Our Remodel Process

Clear steps from existing pool to finished backyard.

Every remodel is different, but most projects move through these major evaluation, preparation, construction, and finish stages.

1

Initial Conversation

We discuss the existing pool, visible concerns, desired improvements, approximate investment, timing, access, and overall project goals.

2

Site Review

We review the pool, equipment, deck, tile, coping, drainage, access, existing materials, and visible conditions before recommending a scope.

3

Detailed Proposal

We prepare a clear, itemized proposal identifying the approved remodel scope, major materials, allowances, options, and construction responsibilities.

4

Demolition & Preparation

Existing materials are removed as required, surfaces are prepared, and hidden conditions are evaluated as demolition exposes the underlying pool.

5

Repairs & Upgrades

Approved plumbing, skimmer, equipment, lighting, tile, coping, bonding, hardscape, drainage, and other improvements are completed.

6

Interior Finish & Startup

The new plaster or pebble finish is installed, the pool is filled, startup begins, cleanup is completed, and final care information is reviewed.

Local Experience Matters

Pool remodeling throughout Contra Costa County and the East Bay.

Older pools throughout the area can be affected by expansive soils, drainage, aging plumbing, outdated equipment, deck movement, access limitations, and city-specific permit requirements.

Built for Local Conditions

A successful remodel should improve the appearance of the pool while also considering conditions that can affect long-term performance, maintenance, and the surrounding property.

Drainage, soil movement, deck elevations, retaining conditions, utility locations, plumbing age, and equipment access should not be ignored simply because the project is called a remodel.

Pool Remodel FAQ

Common questions about remodeling an existing pool.

These are some of the questions homeowners commonly ask before beginning a pool renovation.

Do you remodel existing swimming pools?

Yes. Pacheco Landscape & Pool Construction remodels existing swimming pools throughout Contra Costa County and selected East Bay communities, including finishes, tile, coping, equipment, plumbing, lighting, hardscape, drainage, and complete backyard improvements.

Can you resurface my pool without replacing the waterline tile?

Our standard recommendation is to replace the waterline tile whenever we refinish a pool. A pool refinish is an opportunity to reset the critical transition between the new interior finish, tile line, grout, coping, bond beam, and pool shell.

Leaving older tile and grout in place can create future risks if those materials fail after the new finish is installed.

Why do you recommend replacing tile during a pool refinish?

Pool tile and grout have a limited lifespan. The new interior finish meets and slightly overlaps the bottom edge of the tile, helping form a watertight transition at one of the most important areas of the pool.

If old tile fails later, replacing it requires demolition directly against the new pool finish, which can chip, crack, or damage the new surface. Failing grout may also allow water behind the tile line and affect the bond beam or concrete shell.

Replacing the tile creates a cleaner, easier-to-maintain surface and allows the finish, tile, grout, and coping to function as one complete long-term remodel system.

Are you the cheapest pool remodel contractor?

No. We do not try to compete on the lowest bid. We focus on proper preparation, quality construction, clear communication, detailed proposals, and remodels built correctly from start to finish.

What pool remodel upgrades are most common?

Common upgrades include a new interior finish, waterline tile, coping, LED lighting, automation, energy-efficient equipment, plumbing improvements, skimmer work, deck replacement, drainage improvements, and outdoor living upgrades.

Can you remodel the surrounding backyard too?

Yes. In addition to pool remodeling, we build patios, walkways, concrete, outdoor kitchens, fire features, retaining walls, drainage systems, pool houses, ADUs, and complete outdoor living spaces.

Can hidden conditions affect the remodel price?

Yes. Pool remodels involve an existing structure, and some conditions cannot be fully evaluated until old plaster, tile, coping, decking, or other materials are removed. Cracks, delamination, damaged plumbing, deteriorated bond beams, leaking penetrations, or other concealed conditions may require additional repairs.

What areas do you serve?

We serve Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Danville, Lafayette, Orinda, Moraga, Blackhawk, Concord, Clayton, Alamo, Martinez, and selected communities throughout Contra Costa County and the East Bay.

Ready to bring your pool back to life?

Start with a brief phone conversation about the existing pool, visible concerns, desired upgrades, timing, access, and what you are considering. From there, we can determine whether the next step should be an on-site consultation.
