Basic Pool Remodel or Full Pool Remodel?

The dividing line is usually much clearer than homeowners expect: a basic remodel stays inside the pool; a full remodel begins when the surrounding concrete or hardscape is removed.

Tile, coping and a new plaster or pebble finish can often be handled as a focused cosmetic remodel. Once demolition reaches the deck around the pool, the work can affect the skimmer, plumbing, coping, tile, interior finish, electrical bonding and permit scope—creating an entirely different project.

This is not a sales tactic. It is a construction-planning rule based on how existing pools are assembled and what demolition can disturb. Trying to treat deck removal as an isolated concrete project often creates a chain of repairs that should have been coordinated from the beginning.

Why Removing the Deck Rarely Stays “Just Concrete”

The pool shell, skimmer, coping, tile, finish, plumbing and deck are not independent pieces. They meet one another at critical transitions. When demolition reaches those transitions, one repair can trigger the next.

POOL-ADJACENT DECK SAFETY

The bonding system beneath a pool deck matters as much as the surface above it.

Once deck demolition becomes part of the project, the work is no longer just cosmetic. Concrete or pavers surrounding a swimming pool are not only part of the finished backyard. The required perimeter equipotential bonding system beneath or within that hardscape is an important part of the pool’s electrical safety system.

What equipotential bonding does

Equipotential bonding interconnects the conductive pool shell, required perimeter surfaces, and other applicable metal components so they remain at substantially the same electrical potential. Its purpose is to reduce potentially dangerous voltage differences in the area where swimmers enter, exit, and stand around the pool.

Bonding is separate from grounding and GFCI protection. Each system serves a different safety function, and one does not replace the others.

  • For a typical conductive concrete pool, the perimeter bonding system connects to the pool-shell reinforcing steel at a minimum of four uniformly spaced points.
  • Bonding conductors used for this purpose are generally minimum No. 8 AWG solid copper, subject to the approved plans and applicable electrical requirements.
  • The bonded perimeter area generally extends approximately 3 feet horizontally beyond the inside wall of the pool.
  • Removing an existing pool deck can cut, damage, or completely remove the bonding system that was incorporated into the original hardscape.
Why this matters: If the deck comes out, the replacement hardscape cannot simply be installed without addressing the bonding system. It must be rebuilt correctly as part of the full remodel in accordance with the approved plans, applicable electrical requirements, and local inspection process.

When the New Deck Is Concrete

The reinforcing steel or approved welded-wire reinforcement in the surrounding concrete is incorporated into the required bonding system and interconnected with the pool shell. The bonding work must be in place before the new concrete conceals it.

When the New Surface Is Pavers

Where suitable reinforcing steel is not available, an approved copper grid, listed welded-wire system, or other code-compliant perimeter-bonding method is installed beneath the paving and connected to the pool shell as required.

PLAPCO does not treat pool-deck bonding as an optional detail. When a project crosses the line from a basic remodel into deck demolition, the required bonding work becomes part of rebuilding the pool correctly and safely before the new concrete or pavers cover the system.

The difference is not just the cost of new concrete. A full remodel involves more demolition, more trades, more buried work, more inspections and more materials—then still includes the tile, coping and interior finish required in the basic remodel.

Full Remodels Can Trigger More Than Cosmetic Requirements

Once a permit reaches electrical bonding, buried plumbing, equipment, heating, drainage or safety systems, the affected work may need to meet the code in effect for that permit. The exact upgrades depend on the jurisdiction, approved plans and project scope. Modern variable-speed equipment, compliant controls and coordinated automation may become part of the project, but requirements are evaluated case by case rather than assumed universally.

Why a Full Remodel Reaches Six Figures

Homeowners often compare a basic tile-and-finish estimate to a full remodel and assume the difference is mostly concrete. It is not. The full remodel adds demolition, export, new hardscape, new plumbing, skimmers, bonding, electrical work, equipment coordination, inspections and site restoration.

With approximately 500–600 square feet of hardscape around an average pool, PLAPCO’s experience is that touching the deck typically moves the project to a minimum six-figure planning level.

Basic vs. Full Remodel FAQs

PLAPCO generally does not treat deck removal around an existing pool as an isolated concrete job. Demolition can damage the skimmer, coping, tile, finish transition, plumbing and perimeter bonding system. We plan the work as a coordinated full remodel so the affected systems can be rebuilt correctly rather than repaired piecemeal after damage occurs.
The skimmer throat passes through the pool wall and meets the deck at the pool edge. Existing concrete is commonly placed tightly around the skimmer body and throat. Breaking and removing that concrete can crack the skimmer, separate connections or expose aging plumbing that should not simply be buried again.
Not automatically. Equipment requirements depend on its condition, the approved project scope, energy-efficiency requirements and local plan review. A full remodel often creates a practical opportunity to replace aging equipment and coordinate modern controls, but the final equipment package is project-specific.
A localized repair may be possible in some situations, especially when it is away from the coping, skimmer and bonded perimeter work. The location, demolition method, existing bonding and desired finished appearance must be evaluated before deciding whether the project can remain limited.
The tile line, grout and interior finish work together at an important transition. Leaving older tile in place can create a future failure point above a brand-new finish. Replacing the tile during refinishing allows the transition to be rebuilt cleanly, protects the bond beam and avoids risking damage to the new finish if old tile fails later.
